National children Mountain Conservation Meet-2002
The year 2002 has been proclaimed as "International year of Mountains (IYM) by Untied Nations mainly to enhance awareness about the global importance of mountain ecosystem. Various programmes / events are being organized in this connection in Pakistan by Government Departments and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). Adventure Foundation Pakistan, being leader in mountain related adventure and environmental activities in Pakistan is taking active part in IYM celebrations. National Children Mountain Conservation Meet - 2002 was a significant event organized by AFP in this connection. Main objective of this 10-days event was to create awareness among young people about mountain ecosystem and to involve them in activities using mountain environment as an open classroom. As many as one hundred children of both genders from all parts of Pakistan including Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir participated in the programme. Mr. Aftabur Rehman Rana DG, AFP was chief Organizer of this event. A team of thirty staff members comprising wilderness guides, filed scientists and experts of mountain bio-diversity accompanied the group. The 10-days activities included presentations and lectures from experts and resources persons on various mountain environment themes, a survey of flora and fauna of Kaghan Valley, tree plantation, clean up of lake Saiful Malook's surroundings and Naran town and an awareness walk in Naran. Concluding event of NCMC - Meet was a Children Forum held at Islamabad on July 9, in which selected participant children presented their papers on different topics related to the conservation of Kaghan Valley. The Forum was followed by the Closing Ceremony of the programme. Barrister Shahida Jamil, Federal Minister for Environment was the Chief Guest at the occasion. She termed NCMC-Meet 2002 as a "highly Commendable Job" done by children in her address. She also assured the participants that suggestions given by them in the Children Forum will be included in the National Conservation Strategy soon to be finalized by the Federal Government. NCMC Meet-2002 proved to be a success and won laurels from all quarters. Therefore, AFP Council has decided to repeat it every year in the same way.
