Ayubia National Park Clean Up Drive
In connection with the celebrations of IYM-2002, AFP, IUCN-Pakistan, WWF-Pakistan and NWFP Wildlife Department jointly organized a Clean Up of Ayubia National Park (A.N.P) from July 19 to 21, 2002. Main objective of this programme was to create awareness among local people and visitors about the importance of the conservation of natural environment in mountains and to remove the garbage from mountain slopes of Ayubia National Park. A.N.P is one of the 14 National Parks of Pakistan as declared in 1984. It is spread over an area of 33 kms between Changla Gali and Nathiagali. It is habitat of rare wild plants and animals. Opening ceremony of the event was held at PTDC Motel Ayubia on 20th July. Dr. Asif Zaidi chief of IUCN-Pak., Islamabad Office was the Chief Guest at the Occasion. Mr. Aftab Rana DG, AFP, Mr. Mehmood Akhtar Cheema of IUCN, Mr. Amjad Aslam manager WWF-Pakistan and Dr. Mumtaz Malik Chief Conservator NWFP Wildlife Department were also present and spoke on the occasion. 25 AFP Volunteers and 100 Scouts of Hazara Boy Scouts Association took part in clean up of the Ayubia N.P. Area and collected hundreds of kgs of non-perishable garbage. Officials of all NGO's and Govt. Departments themselves took part in the Clean Up. AFP volunteers even used technique of repelling to collect garbage from steep slopes under supervision of Mr. Shabab Kakvi and Mr. Aftab Rana. Organizers of this Drive also had meetings with the owners of local hotels and restaurants and persuaded them to dispose off their garbage properly. Closing ceremony of the event was held on 21st July at Dunga Gali. Mr. Khalid Sultan Secretary Environment NWFP was the Chief Guest on the occasion while Brig. (R) Jan Nadir Khan, President AFP presided the ceremony. Mr. Kalil ur Rehman, Tehsil Nazim Nathiagali was also present.
